The Blues Don’t Change

The show takes its title from the song and album The Blues Don’t Change by Albert King, an American blues guitarist, and singer. The theme of the song resonated with the larger social conditions and lived experiences that inspired these pieces and my painting career as a whole.

My work is heavily influenced by music, as you will see many of the works have a song attached to them. The Blues has roots in the Deep South, stemming from African-American work songs, Negro Spirituals. These songs, chants, and ballads served were cathartic expressions used for communication across time and space. The resonance is still felt today, both the music and the message.

Lastly, the color blue has obvious importance in my work. I have the most control over blue. I see tones and variations that I don’t see in other colors. Intentionally and organically I always find myself coming back.

Like timeless music… the blues don’t change.
