From the onset of his practice, music has been the primary catalyst for Ace’s artistic ideation. Melodies evoke memories, both past, and present, real and imagined. The elicited emotions, scenes, and soundscapes are then distilled through the process of making, leaving an essence that resonates on the canvas.
In the majority of his works, Ace uses a methodological and meditative process of repetition to create sweeping geographies of layered acrylic.
Inspired by the meditative quality and process-oriented works of Dansaekhwa artists such as Park Se-Bo and Ha Chong-Hyun Ace’s work is an echo of a process. There is a natural rhythm created through the repetition of horizontal and vertical lines which bring physicality and tactility to his textured memory.
At times his intuitive mark-making will lead him into figuration and form. These works are a different type of mental battle, as the goal becomes to illuminate the form hidden within the image, in a similar fashion to a sculptor finding form hidden within the clay.
